What is Botox?

The use of botox for medical purposes, with the brand name of botulinum toxin, which is the most effective biological toxin known, started in the 1980s, following the demonstration of its neuromuscular blocking effect. Botox applications, which are successful in many diseases that are thought to be caused by excessive contraction of striated and smooth muscles in medicine, are now performed for cosmetic purposes.

Is Botox Snake Venom?

Botox is not snake venom.  It is obtained by laboratory purification of the toxin synthesized by Clostridium Botulinum bacteria.

What were Botox Applications in Dentistry?

In dentistry, Botox can be used to treat conditions such as:

  • Bruxism: Botox can be used in patients who have had tooth pulling or clenching to relax the muscles.

  • Migraine: Botox can be used to reduce migraine pain.

  • Tmj (Temporomandibular joint disorder): Botox can be used in Tmj patients who have a feeling of pain and stiffness.

 

  • Smile aesthetics: Botox can be used to reduce smile lines.

  • Painful gingiva: Botox can be used in patients with gingival pain.

Is Botox Safe?

Yes, Botox is generally considered safe when used in small doses under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional. It has been approved by the Ministry of Health in Turkey and in more than 70 countries around the world. Approved botox was first used in the treatment of strabismus. It has subsequently been used in swallowing disorders in children and relaxation of muscles in some spastic patients.

Who can apply Botox?

Botox application can be applied by licensed health professionals such as dentists and doctors in many countries such as Turkey. These professionals are trained and certified in the use of Botox application and take all necessary precautions to ensure that Botox application is done safely and effectively.

How is bruxism (teeth clenching), clenching (teeth grinding) treatment done?

Teeth clenching (bruxism) and teeth grinding treatment is usually done by combining many methods. Treatment options include:

Bite plate: This is a tool that is placed between the teeth and holds the teeth in place. Bite plate can be used when clenching or grinding, and can protect the teeth.

Does the face get worse when the effect of botox wears off?

The effects of Botox are not permanent, so treated wrinkles and fine lines may reappear after the effects of the treatment wear off. However, it's important to remember that Botox doesn't make your face worse than it was before treatment. Wrinkles and fine lines that were before the treatment will still be there after the effects of Botox wear off. Also, the effects of Botox can be maintained by repeating the treatment at regular intervals.
